(11) 特殊的複數形

(a) 字尾加 ’s的的複數形

字母的複數：
Dot your i’s( is亦可)----------------------------------------- i要記得打一點
Cross your t’s( ts亦可)---------------------------------- --------t上要劃一橫
There are too many s’s.---------------------------------------------寫太多s了
Take care of your a’s and the’s.-----------------------------小心冠詞的用法
Don’t mix up your n’s and ng’s.----------------------------- n和ng不要混淆

數字的複數：
In the 1970’s (1970s亦可)--------------------------------------------1970年代
In the 2000’s (2000s亦可)-----------------------------------------------21世紀

縮寫的複數：
two MRT’s (MRTs亦可)-------------------   -------------------------兩班捷運
A lot of BMW’s (BMWs亦可)-------------------------------------好多的寶馬

(b) 複合名詞的單數和複數(複合名詞的第一個名詞通常轉作形容詞)

正常的複合名詞的複數( s加在最後一字)：

boy friend – boy friends 男朋友              runaway – runaways 逃犯

go-between – go-betweens 仲介              go-down – go-downs 倉庫

fountain pen – fountain pens 鋼筆           stand-by – stand-bys 預備

forget-me-not – forget-me-nots 勿忘我   grown-up – grown-ups 成人

merry-go-round – merry-go-rounds 旋轉木馬
ne’er-do-well –ne’er-do-wells 無用之人

特殊的複合名詞的複數( s加在第一字)：

passer-by – passers-by 路人、過客
man of war – men of war軍艦

grant-in-aid – grants-in-aid 補 助款 
mouthful – mouthsful(mouthfuls亦可)

notary public – notaries public 公證人

mother-in-law – mothers-in-law(mother-in-laws亦可) ……etc.

特殊的複合名詞的複數(前後皆須改為複數形)：
gentleman farmer - gentlemen farmers耕儒
woman doctor – women doctors女醫師
manservant – menservants男僕人

(c) 必然的複數：有些事物正常狀況下一定成双或成群地出現，使用上慣用複數。

tongs 夾 具   bowels 內 臟    trousers 長 褲

dregs 沉澱物 savings 存 款   grounds 殘渣，場地

shoes 鞋 子   glasses 眼 鏡    proceeds 銷售額

scales 天 平    arms 武 器      valuables 貴重物品

ashes 灰 燼    embers 殘 火    remains 殘留物

pliers 鉗 子    pincers 鉗 子    contents 目 錄

lungs 肺 臟     arrears 拖欠款 belongings 財 產

pants 褲 子     earnings 所 得  intestines 腸

assets 資 產    auspices 贊 助  pajamas 睡 衣

oats 燕 麥       scissors 剪 刀   spectacles 眼 鏡

stairs 階 梯     forceps 鑷 子    compasses 圓 規

shears 大剪刀 bellows 風 箱   colours(colors) 旗 幟

以上單字前若是加上單位或形容詞，則可視為單數
My shoes are under the stool.
A pair of shoes costs one thousand NT dollars.
Mary’s glasses are on her desk.
The pair of glasses is worth two thousand NT dollars.

A garden shears花剪 A screw stairs螺旋梯 A curling-tongs彎夾……etc.

(d)專有的複數：
The Martins--------------------------------------------------------馬丁一家
The young Martins----------------------------------------馬丁家的小孩
The brothers Mario-------------------------------------------馬利歐兄弟
The whys and hows-----------------------------------------------問與答
