other：表量形容詞(Quantitative)，other可修飾單、複數可數名詞及不可數名詞，another只可修飾單數可數名詞及不可數名詞，轉作不定代名詞，other可替代單、複數可數名詞及不可數名詞，another只可替代單數可數名詞及不可數名詞。

one…and the other ● ○ (● = one，○ = the other)

one…and the others ● ○○ (● = one，○○ = the others)

one…another…and the other ●○◎ (● = one，○ = another，◎= the other)

I have two dogs, one is black and the other is white.

I have three dogs, one is black and the others are white.

I have three dogs, one is black, another is white, and the other spots.

There are many students, some are boys and the others are girls.

Some students walk to school, others ride bikes, and still others take a bus.

註 the other強調總共只有"兩方"的另一方，若為多數須加s --- the others

any other 另外的，之後可加單數及多數名詞，亦表相同或不同的其他人或物

He is the tallest student.

= He is taller than any other student. [只可加單數] (不可用 another)

= He is taller than (all) the other students. [只可加多數]

I don’t love any other girl but you. [可加單數] (不可用 another)

= I don’t love any other girls but you. [也可加多數]

another 另一，之後只可加單數名詞，表相同或不同的其他人或物
I do not like this sweater, show me another (= any other), please. [表同類的另一]
Do you want another(= any other) cup of coffee? [表示再一]
To say is one thing, To do is another. [表不同之事] (不可用 any other)
Her mother is a teacher, and she is another. [表同類] (不可用 any other)

each other, one another：相互代名詞(Reciprocal Pronoun)，通常做為副詞，修飾前方的動詞，each other, one another 於現代英文實際應用上已無分別(開明英文法 林語堂7.23 p.154)；然而由其字面，仍可窺得each other著重於兩者之間的“互相”，one another著重於三者以上的“互相”的原始意義，聊予識貨者發思古之幽情。

這兩個男生互助完成了工作

The two boys help each other (one another) finish the work.

所有的人應當試著彼此了解

All of the people should try to understand one another (each other).

註 若於考題中出現此題型，仍應謹守each other著重於兩者之間的“互相”，one another著重於三者以上的“互相”之原則。
