Need (須要) 的用法
Need用於肯定句時，一律做為一般動詞(本動詞)使用，只有用在問句或否定句中，才可做為助動詞使用。
【觀念確認】做為助動詞的need其後必須接原形動詞，其現在式和過去式皆為need，不可寫成needed；其否定為need not，亦可縮為needn’t。
(1) need做為一般動詞(本動詞)使用，現在式主詞第三人稱須加s，過去式須加ed。
我須要些錢買參考書
I need some money to buy reference books.
他有必要和他爸媽好好地談一談
He needs a conversation with his parents.
當我在美國時，我必須自力更生
I needed to work my way through college when I was in America.
(2) need做為一般動詞，受詞若是動詞，則須用不定詞，用動名詞則具被動意味。
我待會兒須要去洗車
I need to wash my car later.
我的車須要洗一洗
My car needs washing
= My car needs to be washed.
(3) need做為助動詞，受詞若是動詞，則須用原形動詞，現在式、過去式仍用need。
他有必要和你一起去嗎?
Does he need to go with you?
= Need he go with you?
不，他用不著去
No, he doesn’t need to go.
= No, he need not go.
是的，他必須去
Yes, he needs to go.
= Yes, he must go.
= Yes, he may go.
= Yes, it is necessary for him to go.
他昨天有必要和你一起去嗎?
Did he need to go with you yesterday?
= Need he go with you yesterday?(過去式助動詞仍用need，不可用needed)
他昨天其實不用去
No, he didn’t need to go yesterday.
= No, he need not go yesterday. (過去式助動詞仍用need，不可用needed)
他昨天不去不行
Yes, he needed to go yesterday.
= Yes, he must go yesterday.
= Yes, it was necessary for him to go yesterday.
他那時候不須要我們的幫助
He didn’t need to have any help from us at that time. (need為一般動詞)
= He needed to have no help from us at that time. (need為一般動詞)
= He need not have any help from us at that time. (need為助動詞)
= He need have no help from us at that time. (need為助動詞)
(4) 凡是稍微帶有疑問或否定意味的句子，其中的need就可做為助動詞使用。
再多些動力，機器就能運轉了
The machine needs only to have some more power.
= The machine need only have some more power.
他不知道到底是去還是別去的好
He didn’t know whether he needed to come or not.
= He didn’t know whether he need come or not.
他所須做的，就是再多用功一點
All he needs to do is (to) study harder.
= All he need do is (to) study harder.
(5) Need的過去否定：need not have + P.P.及didn’t need to + V
S + need not have + P.P.
解析 意解為「大可不必…，其實用不著…」
電影還沒開演，我們大可不必這麼趕
The movie is not on yet; we need not have so hurried
S + didn’t need to + V
解析 意解為「並不…」
還有兩個多小時，我們並不趕時間
We didn’t need to hurry because there was still two more hours by then.
